The Wallaceburg Sting senior men's soccer team got back on the winning track.
The Sting won on Saturday 5-0 at home over the London White Eagles to snap a two-game losing streak. The two losses have been the only blemishes on the Sting's promising season so far.
With the win, the Sting are now 10-2-2 and sit in first place in the Western Ontario Soccer League's First Division. The Sting has four games left on their regular season schedule.
The Sting now have 32 points, four points ahead of second-place Chatham.
With the two top teams in the league advancing to the WOSL's Premier Division, every game is important for the Sting.
London English and London Scottish are both tied for third with 24 points
"The guys made a challenge that they want to go to Premier next year," said Sting coach Mark Nowakowski.
To get up to Premier would be a big deal, said Nowakowski.
"We're a small town going against teams in London, Chatham and Sarnia. That's the highest division available."
Nowakowski said at the beginning of the season the team's goal was to win 10 games. With that goal out of the way the team is now looking at moving up.
"The boys should be pretty happy if they make it that far," Nowakowski said.
The Sting play Chatham this Saturday at 6 p.m. at St. Clair College in Chatham. Due to the geographical nature of the game and the closeness in the standings, it will be an important game for the Sting.
"It will be a big game for us, Nowkowski said. "Chatham is always a big game for us. We always have a hard time versus Chatham. It doesn't matter whether we are in first place or last place, Chatham is always tough."
In Saturday's game, Mark Foster, Ryan Nowakowski, Roberto Attardi, Mitchell Kraayenbrink and Matt Feddes scored for the Sting. It was Nowakowski and Kraayenbrink's first goals of the year.
Sam Youlton had the shutout.
The Sting have had a remarkable year. They advanced from the Second Division to the First just this season. In 14 games they have only allowed six goals.
The Sting will lose striker Phil Nywening for the remainder of the season. Nywening, who leads the Sting in goals with six, left last week for Graceland College in Iowa, where he is a sophomore on the men's soccer team.
