Brently Belanger's wish finally came true.
Belanger is finally playing for Mark Davis with the Wallaceburg Lakers.
Belanger, a former Mooretown Flag, is paying dividends with the Lakers, as he scored the winning goal in a 4-3 win over the Essex 73s on Sept. 30 at Wallaceburg Memorial Arena.
"A lot of my friends came to Wallaceburg," Belanger said. "Nothing bad about Mooretown but I wish I played with my friends from the start."
Essex out shot the Lakers 35-28 in the game, which was Wallaceburg's sixth straight win to open the season.
Davis said the 73s outplayed the Lakers in certain areas.
"But in the third period, we just kept battling and battling. We did some good things, we had some great positive notes tonight," Davis said.
Tyson Isaac tied the game at three with a slapshot with just over six minutes remaining in the game.
Belanger scored the winner with just 50 seconds remaining in regulation.
It was Belanger's second game-winning goal for the Lakers (6-0-0), who sit on top of the North Division standings in the Great Lakes Junior C hockey league.
A Sarnia resident, Belanger played last year for the Oro-Medonte in the Greater Metro Jr. A hockey league. He was the team's MVP.
"I've known Brently for years," Davis said of Belanger. "He always wanted to play for me and we finally got him out of Mooretown."
Davis said Belanger is a hard-worker.
"He can score, kill penalties and he has got energy galore."
A bonus for Belanger is playing with his younger brother Jordan.
This is the first time the brothers have played together.
"It feels great. I just want to help him out and make sure he's going on the right path," said Belanger.
Wallaceburg played Essex in Essex this past Tuesday and hosted Dresden at home on Wednesday.
The next home game for the Lakers is Oct. 14 versus Blenheim.
